Research Technician/Analyst/Scientist to work on protein engineering/synthetic biology

We are looking for a biochemist/molecular biologist/structural biologist with a background in protein chemistry to work in the Department of Biochemistry at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. You will be part of a small group that is developing fluorescent biosensors based on engineered proteins for a variety of biomedical applications. We use a range of experimental techniques including synthetic gene construction, heterologous protein expression, protein purification by affinity chromatography, different fluorophore labeling strategies, a range of methods to analyze biosensor function and stability. The responsibilities for this position is to assist with laboratory procedures and techniques such as:

  • Heterologous protein expression in E.coli
  • Protein purification by affinity chromatography
  • Protein gel electrophoresis
  • Biophysical protein characterization and ligand titrations
  • General laboratory maintenance: e.g., preparations of buffers and reagents, autoclave plastic/glassware/solutions, maintain laboratory equipment
  • Ordering of chemicals and supplies

Desired other skills:

Chromatography using the ÄKTA system, and molecular biology (cloning).

Education:

A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Molecular biology, Biochemistry, or a related discipline.

Experience:

At least one-year full-time laboratory research experience in a biotech/pharmaceutical company or academic research environment.
