Job Purpose

The UGE Lineman is responsible for performing diversified work related to the construction and maintenance of underground power lines, from plant/station to meter base, auxiliary facilities, and equipment for the distribution of electricity. This position supports the Line team and works with other personnel from the department.

Essential Functions

1. Drive truck to jobsite and maintain truck stock.
2. Provide the needed services for the construction, operation, and maintenance of the customer’s electrical distribution system.
3. Understand and be able to perform switching procedures to isolate and insulate, splice, and terminate underground power lines following proper safety procedures.
4. Set and work on underground transformers and other devices.
5. Properly phase and mark/tag underground equipment.
6. Provide connecting and disconnecting, installing and removal, and moving and transferring of various electrical devices on customers facilities, i.e. transformers, transformer banks, regulators, switches, switching devices, capacitor banks, etc.
7. Keep abreast of all changes affecting any records, reports, and related information affecting this position.
8. Investigate consumer complaints and make repairs to energized electrical distribution lines, as needed.
9. Responsible for all personal actions and any personnel, vehicles, or equipment in their care, custody, or control.
10. Report all personal & vehicle accidents/incidents immediately to supervisors, cooperate and assist in the investigations of the same.
11. Set a good example for less experienced employees by always following and teaching safe practices.
12. Perform other duties as required and/or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

1. A High School Degree, or equivalent.
2. 3 years of experience.
3. Understanding of basic and/or advanced electrical principles, including knowledge of electricity (switching/grounding) and how to safely work around it.
4. Knowledge of customer’s specifications and be proficiency in all phases of line construction.
5. Assume full responsibility for completed work, perform routine line work without close supervision, completing work with quality and timeliness.
6. Compliance with proper safety standards, procedures and work practices according to MasTec or the customer, whichever standard is higher.
7. Clarity of vision with the ability to judge distance and space relationships.
8. Precise hand-eye coordination.
9. Ability to identify and distinguish colors.
10. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, plans and specifications.
11. Ability to operate efficiently a bucket truck, digger truck, wire pullers, backyard machine, air compressor, and tools necessary to build/maintain power lines.
12. Ability to work outdoors, even in extreme weather conditions.

Preferred Qualifications

1. 5 or more years of experience.
2. OSHA 10 and Buck Squeeze Certification.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

This job operates in a field environment. This role routinely requires extended periods of bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, lifting, lifting in awkward positions, standing, twisting, reaching above shoulder level, working in confined spaces, working off a pole or in a bucket. Also, working in inclement weather conditions, such as extreme heat, extreme cold, rain, ice, snow, and wind for 10 hour work days, with breaks. During storms this role may work in these conditions from 10 to 15 hours daily, breaks included.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. This position is physically active, with lifting required. Must be able to bend and lift and carry up to 100 pounds.
